The museum was founded in 1925.The first director was N.A. Nakonechniy. In 1950s the museum was closed because of the room absence. In 1960s it was opened by the regional studies specialists. Since 1976 the folk museum with the complex of the historical-architectural monuments in the Kiy-Island was reorganized into the Onega-Kiy subsidiary of the Solovetskiy state historical-architectural and natural museum-reserve.
In 1987 the Onega museum became a subsidiary of the Arkhangelsk regional studies museum. In 1988 in connection with 100th anniversary of the Polar captain and researcher A.S. Kuchin, it got the status of the historical-memorial museum.
The museum shows the district’s specialties with its collections and expositions. The Onega Pomorie with its trading activity differed from the inside agricultural and cattle-rearing places of the Onega district. There were the Onega trade and craft settlements with the features of the town burgher culture between them. The folk and religious art show the spiritual life of the district’s population.
The collections of the family of the Onega citizen G.N. Negodyaev’s family are interesting as well as the Onega embroidery, the treasure of 1916, and also the collection of the memory things of A.S. Kuchin- the famous Polar researcher and oceanographer.
The main direction of the museum exposition activity is creating the temporary exhibitions. Currently there are several expositions in the museum: “Building a house”, “Turning the pages of the past”, “The sea crafts”, “Writing with the threads”, “The paints of the native place”.
