The history of Kiy-island is closely related with the name of the famous religious leader of XVII century and reformer of Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Nikon.
According to legend, once in the storm Nikon lost the companions and then he found the salvation on the island. In memory of his miraculous salvation Nikon founded a Cross monastery (XVII cent.) – it is one of three monasteries, those were built on his own initiative. They were the strongholds of his power and the start points of the church reform.
The inside plan of the monastery is very compact. From the seaside you can see how well the monumental complex is fitted in the rocky relief of the island.
Between the numerous monastery buildings the Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral, nadkladeznaya Church with stone cells and double-leveled Church of the Nativity of the virgin with the refectory and the steward's chambers are well preserved till nowadays.
The delivery of people to the island is realized on boats by the administration of "Kiyskiy" guest house
